Arts in Healing…the Bloomberg Childrens Medical Center

This is an amazing new addition, the Bloomberg Children’s Center, at the John’s Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore Maryland, which not only incorporates unique and inspiring architecture and design, but also is home to more than 500 original works of art created by 70 different artists, specifically for the hospital project. Due to the stressful nature of a hospital visit, especially for children, this building was designed to bring comfort and healing to both the patient and their family.

“The goal is to create a humane and dignified experience for those under stress,” says Michael Iati, senior director of architecture and planning, Johns Hopkins Health System. “The art created for the building and the building’s design are central to elevating the experience of coming to the hospital. Visitors and patients may not be able to quantify this directly but they will feel the building’s uniqueness and comfort.”

The exterior of the building is also particularly amazing as its made up of multi colored glass panes with blue as the dominant color to create an impression similar to one of Claude Monet’s paintings. The result is a shimmering exterior that captures the light of the sky, allowing the building to change in sync with the environment, establishing it as a natural and inviting presence.

Not only that, but the buildings also feature green roofs (my favorite!)…

There will be a donor/dedication event on April 12th while the actual hospital will open April 29th when the patients will be moved in to the new facilities.
